UK ETA Travel Requirement

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is an online travel authorization system that eligible travelers must apply for before entering the United Kingdom.

The UK ETA may be required for short-term visits to the UK, including tourism, visiting family or friends, short-term business, or short-term study. Once approved, it allows travelers to stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit.

Before traveling, eligible visitors must submit their personal details and passport information through the online application system.
This system was introduced to simplify the entry process for travelers and strengthen border security.

UK ETA applications are usually processed quickly, but it may take up to 3 working days.

If the information entered in the UK ETA application does not match the information on your passport, or if you travel with a different passport than the one used for the application, you may be denied boarding or experience entry issues. Please make sure to review all information carefully before final submission.

Who Needs It
Travelers from eligible countries who do not require a visa to visit the United Kingdom.

Important Information

  • A UK ETA is required for eligible travelers visiting the UK, including children and infants, and each traveler must have their own authorization.
  • A UK ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry into the United Kingdom. Final entry permission is determined by UK border officials upon arrival.
  • An approved UK ETA is valid for 2 years, or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • If your passport details or personal information change, or if you obtain a new passport, you must apply for a new UK ETA before your next trip.

FAQ

If your UK ETA expires after you enter the UK, you do not need to apply for a new one only because it expires during your stay.

A UK ETA is required before traveling to the UK, so it should be valid when you travel and enter.

However, if you plan to visit the UK again later, you must apply for a new UK ETA before your next trip.

In general, you do not need to bring a UK ETA printed copy or digital copy to the airport as a required travel document.

A UK ETA is digitally linked to the passport used in the application.
This means that airlines and UK border authorities can usually check your UK ETA status using your passport details.

However, it may be helpful to save your approval email or application result screen for your own reference, especially during airline check-in or travel document checks.

The most important thing is to travel with the same passport you used when applying for your UK ETA.

Before traveling, make sure your passport number, passport expiry date, and UK ETA approval information all match correctly.

The UK ETA transit requirement depends on how you transit through the United Kingdom.

If you stay airside at a UK airport and do not pass through UK border control, you generally do not need a UK ETA.

However, if you need to pass through UK border control for baggage collection, terminal transfer, leaving the airport, overnight stay, or any other reason, you may need a UK ETA depending on your nationality.

A UK ETA may apply to travelers who enter the UK or pass through UK border control while transiting, so it is important to check your ticket and transit route before traveling.

If you are not sure whether you will pass through UK border control, check with your airline before your trip.

If your UK ETA is refused, it is not recommended to reapply immediately with the same information.
The UK authorities review your passport details, personal information, previous immigration history, criminal records, security factors, and eligibility. If the same information is submitted again, the result may be refused again.

If your UK ETA is refused, you generally cannot appeal the decision. If you still need to travel to the United Kingdom, applying for an appropriate visa may be the correct next step instead of simply reapplying for a UK ETA.

However, if your application was not processed because of an input error, missing information, or a payment issue, you may be able to apply again after checking the notice and correcting the information.

Therefore, if your UK ETA is refused, review the result carefully and consider the proper next step, such as applying for a visa if necessary.

If the passport linked to your UK ETA has expired or changed, your existing UK ETA cannot be used.

A UK ETA is linked to the passport used in the application.
Therefore, if your passport expires or you receive a new passport, you must apply for a new UK ETA using your new passport details.

A UK ETA is generally valid for 2 years, but if the linked passport expires earlier, the UK ETA also expires with that passport.
This means that even if the original UK ETA approval period remains, you cannot use it with a new or different passport.

Before traveling, make sure your passport number, passport expiry date, and UK ETA approval information match the passport you will actually use for travel.
