Who Must Apply for K-ETA?
Korea’s Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) is a system that requires travelers from certain countries to obtain prior approval before entering Korea visa-free.
Below is a detailed explanation of who is required to apply for K-ETA.
1. Nationals of Visa-Free Countries Not Covered by K-ETA Exemption
Citizens of 112 countries and regions with visa-free agreements with Korea are generally required to apply for K-ETA.
However, certain countries (e.g., Japan, the United States, Germany, etc.) may be temporarily exempted from K-ETA requirements.
This applies to travelers visiting Korea for tourism, visiting family or friends, attending events, or staying for short-term purposes (up to 90 days).
2. Cases Where K-ETA Exemption Does Not Apply
Although K-ETA exemptions apply to some countries and specific age groups (under 17 and over 65), the following circumstances require a K-ETA application:
- When the traveler is from a non-exempt country
- When the purpose of entry is other than tourism (e.g., business, short-term employment, academic activities, etc.)
- When the purpose of entry does not meet approval criteria or is unclear
3. When the Existing K-ETA Has Expired or Passport Information Has Changed
An issued K-ETA is usually valid for two years. However, reapplication is required under the following conditions:
- When passport information (name, nationality, passport number, expiration date, etc.) has been updated
- When the previous K-ETA has expired
- When the purpose of travel differs from the original purpose indicated during the application
4. Applying for K-ETA Is Recommended in Uncertain Cases
Even if you are exempt from K-ETA, you may benefit from applying for one to skip the entry form process and enjoy a faster, more convenient immigration process.
If your eligibility for exemption is unclear, it is advisable to apply in advance to avoid any issues.
5. Important Notes
- Providing false or inaccurate information may result in the rejection or cancellation of K-ETA approval. This may also be considered a violation of Korea’s immigration laws and lead to restrictions on entry.
- Having a K-ETA does not guarantee entry into Korea; final approval is determined by the immigration officer upon arrival.
- The application fee is non-refundable, even if the application is denied.
