There are not many restaurants that I would recommend more than Kalaya. We had an amazing dinner here to celebrate my birthday. The drinks were fabulous- the lum yong being my favorite. If you are afraid that it's a gin drink, you would never know.
For appetizers, we had the pla muk thod kreung- fried calamari with hot peppers. Sooo delicious and spicy!
My wife and I love spice, so we gravitated to the spiciest dishes. But they have plenty of options across the spice spectrum, and the staff is happy to provide guidance.
For entrees, we had the gaeng pae, which is a lamb and goat curry- very spicy and very amazing! Also spicy and delicious was the talay pad kai kem, which is a mixed seafood stir fry.
The place itself is beautifully decorated and the service is impeccable. All the dishes were beautifully presented.
The owner, Nok, visited our table and said hello, making us feel even more welcome- reminding us of the charm and family feel of their old location in South Philly.
Definitely go to Kalaya. Definitely make reservations.
This is my vote for best restaurant in Philadelphia.

Great experience! Had a reservation for bar seating for two. Service was especially excellent. Drinks were great. Food was great, fresh and spice heavy. It could definitely be an acquired taste for some and I wasn’t a big fan of the fish sauces served with dishes. Dumplings were worth the hype.
Took a while to get a reservation but worth it.

I loved this restaurant. I was visiting my daughter and we needed a restaurant to celebrate her medical match day. A very important occasion She chose Kalaya and made the reservation well in advance.
The food was really special. We had a coeliac in our party, a fact that was acknowledged immediately. It was such a treat for her to be able to order anything from the menu and not feel excluded!
So many of the servers and staff stopped by our table to congratulate my daughter and make her feel special.
Hopefully my photos do the food justice. It was all delicious - especially the dumplings and the belly pork.
Our server was great at making recommendations and advising us on how best to navigate the menu and enjoy the food
Oh yes, the cocktails were also very unique and delicious.

Food was good overall. However didn't like few things.
1. Drinks coming out really slow (my husband ordered colada between our 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. Colada came after 2 entees came and we were done with them)
2. Yellow curry with chicken somehow had some gameyness. I asked one of the worker and said it shouldn't be but my tastes buds HATE lamb and goat cheese and it was telling me there is gameyness. I couldn't enjoy much.
3. Server/waiter was not really available. We asked for the drink and he never came to update or anything and a person from bar came with the drink after 2 entrees came out and finished. We had to wait decent amount to get dessert menu to order as well. Water was served timely manner and tables were cleaned between entree and desserts. Though our waiter was present and helped us out, but not as much as we wanted.
Foodwise, the dumplings were surprisingly spicy but really good. The scallion squares are good as well. They were chewy and crispy. The crab fried rice was great as well. My husband loved Thai Tea Tiramisu and I loved the pineapple and coconut Shaved ice.
Overall, great for once in a life time experience. But we won't come here again as I don't think it's worth the money and time. It was about $100 per person with 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 desserts, and 3 drinks. And we can get full happily with Thai food with local restaurants. They may not have specific dishes like here, but won't be necessary for us.

For starters, I was in love with the menu here. They have elevated and creative takes on staple Thai dishes. The place has a pretty casual vibe and is quite spacious, though you should still make a reservation any day of the week. The dumpling/app/salad portions are small enough that you can try a couple w/o getting too full. I ordered the shaw muang (chicken dumplings) -- these had a nice sweet heat mix. In order to enjoy them, I'd definitely say you should have a good spice tolerance by Thai standards. The mussel golae were excellent -- giant tender mussels with a great grill flavor.. probably the best mussel dish I've ever had. For my entree, I went with the goong thod kluae (giant prawn imported from Sri Lanka) and "giant" is an understatement! It was cool that they removed the shell and chopped up the prawn at the table. I'd rate this dish 11/10. The flavors and juices on that plate were heavenly and the rice was perfect for soaking them all up. The fish sauce on the side was also great, but it's another thing I'd only recommend to those with a good spice tolerance. The entree portion was very satisfying. I probably could have split a dessert after those three courses, but was content without one. My server was super helpful and gave solid recommendations; I could tell he knew every menu item very well. The dumplings came out lightning fast and everything else came out as ready; not much time was spent without food on the table. This place is a gem and the type of place I'd be happy to dine at very often.
